Sci-Fi Collectibles: Your Buying Options

Posted by YoungMan | Anime and Sci-Fi | Saturday 31 October 2009 7:20 pm

Would you like to start a sci-fi collection? If so, you are definitely not alone. Science fiction collecting is a popular hobby that is enjoyed by individuals of all ages. One of the many reasons for this popularity is because it is relatively easy to buy science fiction merchandise. Also, that merchandise does not necessarily have to be in rare, limited edition, or valuable formats either. The affordability of collecting science fiction collectibles and other merchandise is another reason why this hobby is popular among those both old and young alike.

As previously stated, it is relatively easy for collectors to find and buy sci-fi collectables. Having a number of options not only provides collectors, such as yourself, with a large selection of merchandise, but also better prices. This is ideal for children, as well as new collectors, as many are still unsure as to whether or not science fiction collecting is right for them. A few locations that science fiction collectors will want to checkout for sci-fi collectibles are highlighted below.

The most popular way to buy science fiction collectables, especially those that are rare, valuable, or hard to find is by doing business with a sci-fi dealer or an online specialty stores. These types of individuals and companies are often considered experts in the field. Many professional dealers and online sci-fi store owners spend a great deal of time researching and hunting for rare and valuable collectables. The only downside to doing business with a specialty online sci-fi store or a sci-fi dealer is that you can expect to pay the full value price. With that being said, if your goal is to later turn a profit, all purchases will likely be considered smart investments.

Hobby shops should also be examined, when looking to start or expand a science fiction collection. Hobby shops are shops that operate both on and offline. Perhaps, the only downside to doing business with a locally owned and operated hobby shop is the product selection. Since science fiction is not the only genre or hobby focused on, product selections are often limited.

Traditional department stores and toy stores are another great way to buy science fiction collectables. This approach is often best for new collectors or children. Often times, it is difficult, if not completely impossible, to find rare and valuable collectables from traditional retail stores. This is because most products insides these stores are mass produced. Mass production, in terms of collectables, tends to decrease value.

In addition to visiting the online websites of specialty sci-fi stores, sci-fi dealers, and hobby shops, online auction websites should also be examined. Online auction websites are a nice, easy, and convenient way to shop for science fiction collectables. With that in mind, be sure to proceed with caution. Unlike many professional science fiction collectable dealers, individual and independent sellers are likely to charge whatever they want and for just about any reason at all.

In addition to having a wide range of options, in terms of purchase locations, collectors should also focus on conditions. Sci-fi collectables are available for sale in a number of different conditions, including both new and used. Although many collectors have their own personals preferences, there are a numbers pros and cons to buying both new and used collectibles.

As for science fiction collectables that are in used conditions, may collectors enjoy the affordability. Generally speaking, when any type of collectable is taken out of the original package or played with, the value of that item decreases and sometimes significantly. With that in mind, investors who are hoping to later resell their collectables for a profit, may not benefit from buying used, unless the sci-fi collectable piece in question is rare.

As for new sci-fi collectables, the greatest benefit of buying new is the value. As previously stated, collectors looking to turn a profit with their science fiction collectables are often encouraged to avoid buying used. A new collectable piece will likely cost a decent amount of money, especially for limited edition sets, that value should increase overtime.

How to Prevent Bullying

Posted by YoungMan | Bullying | Saturday 31 October 2009 5:47 pm

Many children are victims of bullying. Most of these children don’t know how to stop of prevent bullying which is why we as adults must step in to ensure that bullying does not occur. There are many different reasons why kids bully others, and bullying cases can very in severity. No matter how severe bullying is, it is never acceptable and should be handled quickly. If you think your child is at a risk for being bullied, there are things you can do to prevent bullying. It is easier to prevent bullying than to stop it once it has started so keep the following tips in mind for your child to prevent bullying before it starts.

Bullying often happens in unsupervised areas so to prevent bullying tell your kids to avoid being alone in hallways, at recess, and in other areas of the school. Encourage your child to meet and associate with quality friends as bullies are more likely to target children that are alone. Another way to prevent bullying is to advise your child to walk away from situation with bullies. Many times ignoring bullying attempts is the best way to prevent bullying as most bullies are trying to get a reaction out of the children they pick on.

Bullies like to pick on children who are not confident or assertive. Teaching kids to act confidently is a good way to prevent bullying. Children who appear confident and can assert themselves when confronted by a bully are less likely to be picked on. Even if a bully targets your child once, a calm and confident reaction will decrease the chances that your child will be targeted again. Children should not cry or get upset if they are bullied, instead the best way to prevent bullying is for them to use an assertive voice and tell the bully to stop. Bullies like to get a rise out of the kids they pick on so children that are clam and assertive will be less likely to be bullied again.

Because bullies like to pick on children who are not confident, a good way to prevent bullying is to get your child involved in activities that boost their confidence. Children who have other areas of their life to feel confident in will carry over that attitude into situations where they can be bullied. Any enjoyable activity that your child excels at will help to make them more confident and in turn that confidence will help prevent bullying. If your child has confidence and self esteem, it will be easier for them to ignore a bully and not let the bully’s actions bother them.

If your child learns how to respond to a bully and develops a good self image, it will be easy for them to prevent bullying. Make sure your child knows that the bullying is not their fault if they are targeted and that it is not acceptable. Many children are hesitant to turn to adults for help, but telling an adult right away is the best way to prevent bullying in the future.

Boxing: How To Deal With The Punches

Posted by YoungMan | Boxing | Saturday 31 October 2009 9:23 am

If you expect to walk away out of the ring without getting hit you are either the round girl waving a big placard in between rounds or your nickname is “Pretty Boy.” But even the undefeated Mayweather receives a lot of punches when he fights and you as a round girl is out of the question.

The fact is, when you wear boxing gloves, step into the ring and face your opponent, once the bell rings, you cannot escape getting hit. Even if you have the greatest defense, you are only kidding yourself if you believe that you can defend every punch.

You are going to get hit in the face, on the sides and every inch of your upper body that is visible to your opponent. Yes, that’s just the way it is; but if you are planning to become a decent boxer, they you have to prepare for the incoming punches. It will be tough at first. “Learn the hard way,” they say. But it can be done.

There are 3 major things to remember when dealing with the punches: Keep your eyes open, move as much as you can, never flinch.

1. In baseball, a study was made to prove that a 95mph fastball is faster than a blink of an eye. And it does! From the pitcher’s mound to the home plate the distance of 60 feet a ball can travel faster than a blink of an eye. The point is, if a fastball can travel that fast from that distance, how much more will a boxer’s punch from a distance of just 2 feet? Well, you can argue several points here but it is clear that if you can’t blink when hitting a baseball, you definitely can’t close when you are about to get hit by a punch.

Never, in any circumstance, should you close your eyes and turn your back from your opponent. If you want to avoid the onslaught, open your eyes. Obviously, this will allow you to see what’s going on, where the punch is coming from and where it will most likely land if it will land.

Keep your guards up. Do not think that by just closing your eyes, your opponent will get tired and stop. That’s not going to happen. Remember: you cannot fight back if you have no idea what’s going on.

2. In boxing, there is one dominant rule among all other rules: if you are not punching, you are moving. No more, no less. So unless you plan to be a sitting duck throughout the fight, punch, move, punch again, and move again. When you get hit, and that’s not an “if you get hit” kind of thing, never stick your head or the part of your body where it got punched in the first place.

Move! Step, dance, duck, weave or do something that your opponent cannot guess what your next stunt is going to be. If he throws a jab, do not whip back and then come straight towards him.

3. Never Flinch. This may be a natural reaction to something that is coming right at you, but you have to control it. If you flinch, you are only making yourself more vulnerable to your opponent. The best trick to avoid this is to remember number one, get used to things coming at you, and keep your defenses up.

How Car Clubs Can Help You Build a Car

Posted by YoungMan | Collector Cars | Friday 30 October 2009 10:50 pm

Looking to build or restore a great new car? Then you are mostly likely going to need a bit of help with the process, most people certainly do and this is going to be no exception. It is very important to take all of the help that you can get in order to make the process of building or restoring your new car as easy as possible. As you venture in the process of building your vehicle be sure to use all of the benefits that are available to you to make the process as painless as possible

Your first goal should be looking around the car club membership for people who sell car parts. This can be a great way to get some nice discounts on parts that you are going to need which can make it much easier for you to save money. If you are needing large supplies of parts then working with a parts distributor is wise because all of those saved pennies add up. If you are only working on a single car, you may be able to find another member who will sell you the parts that you need at steep discounts. Ask around, you may be surprised at what you are able to find.

If you are going to need painting or even glasswork done for the vehicle, you also need to ask around. Once again, you may be able to get a discount from another member, or you may discover that the club has an agreement worked out with a company that would allow you to receive a discount if you show your membership card. Either way you can save even more money and spend more on the inside or other body work for the vehicle.

As you are working on your car, you are also likely going to need to help, most people have questions when they are building their first few cars and since it is such a large project it is not something that is done quickly. This will allow you plenty of opportunities to talk to other members and ask your questions. This is a great source of free information and can be a huge help when you are stuck. In addition, you can often find someone who is willing to come over and help you with something that is particularly tricky.

One area that people do not consider often is the fact that viewing the cars others have created is a great way to get ideas. After all, anytime you see a car that looks fabulous you are probably making a mental note of what the owner did to create that. Being a member of a car club allows you access on a regular basis to numerous fabulous cars that you can look at for some inspiration. Even if you see something that is only mildly inspiring you may discover that you are able to create an entire masterpiece based off a single idea that you see.

Look forward to car shows that your car club organizes as the perfect opportunity to unveil your incredible new car as well. This is a great opportunity to show it off and gather the opinions of others. Many people bring out their special car even when it is not completely finished so that people can see what it looks like, and offer advice and suggestions on how to complete it.

Remember, if you belong to a car club you are able to use all of the benefits to suit your needs. Often this just means picking the brains of members that are more experienced than you and other times it means using the discounts that have been arranged. With the help that is available, your dream car can become a reality and often for a much lower price that you would have ever thought. Do not be afraid to ask for help, after all the love of the car is what is important and everyone is pulling for you to succeed in your venture.
